In an efficiency-driven society, time is constantly measured, categorised and assigned value through outcomes. Much ‘unproductive’ time, because it fails to yield clear results, has gradually fallen outside the value system familiar to society.
This project has established a virtual organisation to collect, document and preserve these moments and events that remain unrecognised by society, whilst investigating how people seek to interpret them so that they may be translated into a language of value recognised by society.
Through documentation, curation and everyday practice, this project explores an alternative understanding of the relationship between time, value and purpose.
Project description
Unrecognised
A record of socially unrecognised moments.
Each record is presented alongside an explanation, showing how ordinary experiences are translated into forms of value that society can recognise.
Together, they reveal the language through which unproductive time becomes socially acceptable.
Unoccupied
A guide for unproductive living.
It offers a series of simple activities with no intended outcome, inviting people to experience time without the need to justify its value.
These practices create small openings in everyday life where time can exist beyond efficiency, achievement and purpose.
Collection
A collection of specimens from everyday unproductive moments.
Each specimen preserves an experience that genuinely happened but was rarely considered worth recording.
Without recognised value, these moments often disappear from both personal memory and public attention. Within the organisation's archive, they become records of experiences that deserve to be kept.
Afterward
Each card is a simple invitation to do something small with no particular purpose.
Nothing needs to be completed, and nothing needs to be achieved. Just leave a little space for a moment that does not need a purpose.
