Through the invitation of tactility and craft, my practice means to engage in the interplay of absence and presence, drawing on my experience of a narrow boat community. Occupying and negotiating the intermediary space where land crumples into water, I imagine boats as ‘air bags’ or cushions, absorbing and retaining impact from either side. With undercurrents of class politics and a susceptibility to small changes in climate, I envisage boaters as tracing a trajectory for possible future communities

Exploring the retention of water, form, and memory, my practice has expanded from soft, cushioned forms, to airbags inflated via a steaming process. Developed through the traditional process of Shibori (fabric steaming), I practice a repetitive and laborious method of delicately manipulating a material. Leaving behind an accumulation of air pockets, the steam-infused fabric breathes to crumple our encounter with the domestic textile.

To guide the complex network of patterns, I use crochet and open lacework as a stencil. I push and manipulate the fabric through the crocheted holes. The pattern, once removed from its original, becomes a rhythmic outgrowth. Working to fill the void, the gap emerges as a space for reflection.
