Project description

My work begins in the North West Highlands of Scotland, a place where the land and sea collide, where deep geological rhythms meet the fleeting pace of human life. This tension fuels my practice. The sea, with its vast energy, becomes a conduit for the sublime, while the rugged landscape holds the weight of history and change. I’m drawn to the decline of rural traditions, particularly farming, through my connection to the remote farm…Red Point. Here, I’ve painted the farmers who embody this place: a son and wife navigating the financial and environmental challenges of the present, and his father, who worked the land in a different era. The farm’s story is one of resilience amidst upheaval—the collapse of wild salmon populations due to industrial salmon farming and the precarious reliance on sheep farming. These stories, deeply personal yet universal, reflect the fragility of rural life and the enduring connection between people and land. The paintings I make are of pre industrial scenes in a post industrial world, evidenced by the subtle inclusions modern life. My works seek to capture the spirit of the people, the texture of its landscape and the layered histories of this unique place.
