Elisaveta Conlan (b. 2001) is a contemporary artist based in Edinburgh. Conlan’s painting practice explores the theatrics of memory, drawing from historical and fictional images to allude to a ‘stage’ of performances in oil paint. These images draw from the artist’s Slavic heritage as a means of making sense of histories and fictions in times of war. The paintings interpret a plethora of found imagery from archived photography, film stills, pixelated YouTube screenshots and theatre interiors. This body of paintings is in dialogue with the cinematic by creating a montage of fragmented narratives. Pictorially the work suggests a fleeting moment or a memory, through the haze or impression of its subjects. Aesthetically Conlan’s paintings are interested in colour and luminosity- fascinated by the motif of the flame of candlelight whilst exploring the role of the pixel in digitally circulated found images.
