PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Situated within the former Mariners’ Church in Leith, this project reimagines cinema as an immersive social and cultural experience. Located at 39–40 Commercial Street, the Grade C listed building is an example of early Gothic Revival architecture, with its protected historic features preserved within the external shell. Following previous renovations that removed the original interior, the project introduces a new spatial intervention that takes advantage of the building’s generous volume to accommodate raked cinema seating and immersive exhibition environments.

The proposal combines intimate screening spaces with a multifunctional exhibition venue that transforms in response to the most popular film of the season. Moving beyond passive film viewing, the project encourages audiences to physically engage with cinematic worlds through interactive and participatory experiences. Seasonal installations and events could include cooking workshops inspired by Ratatouille, immersive environmental design influenced by Jumanji, or themed social gatherings inspired by Bridgerton.

Designed around the principles of immersion, storytelling, participation and community, the cinema becomes a dynamic cultural hub where film extends beyond the screen. Local creatives including chefs, set designers, costume makers and photographers collaborate to shape each seasonal transformation, creating opportunities for emerging talent while fostering connections within the wider community.

The spatial design enhances the emotional experience of cinema through atmosphere, comfort and enclosure, creating memorable and intimate viewing environments. Contrasting this, the exhibition spaces are open, adaptable and interactive, encouraging exploration, social engagement and collective participation. By combining cinematic storytelling with experiential design, the project redefines the role of cinema as a place where stories are not only watched, but actively lived.
