Project description

The Parrot is a foreign language immersion hub, a learning centre welcoming everyone in Edinburgh regardless of age, gender or nationality. The Parrot has the intentions of a school, with the ethos of a community centre. Here, you are immersed in language through socialisation, rather than taught.

The Parrot is to be treated as ‘a gym for the brain’, a social space you can frequent daily, weekly or monthly, as you wish! Between the cafe/bar, endless book selection, immersion pods, yoga classes and so much more, there is a language learning activity for everyone. Here, local primary schools around Edinburgh are welcomed to the state of the art ‘Modular Play Area’, a bespoke learn-scape designed to encourage language practice between children. The Modular Play Area, themed around the world map, features a library, two movie rooms, an arts and crafts space and an auditorium with custom-designed directional speakers.

The Site

The Parrot is located at 2 West Port, a hybrid 18th and 20th century building. 2 West Port is on the Grassmarket, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Edinburgh’s most popular destinations. The key considerations during the building renovation were to remove dividing walls and create an open-plan design where light can flow through the building, with the use of voids and mezzanines throughout. Colours and materials centred around a Mediterranean vineyard theme, utilising green shades, yellow, burgundy, exposed wood and other natural and recycled materials ie. cork and felt.
