Bio

Karolina is an Illustrator and printmaker who explores traditional illustration techniques with a focus on lino-cut. Her practice is inspired by long walks over our vast landscape which is seeped with stories waiting to be uncovered and cherished. Walk by walk she reveals the British landscape and reminders of those who came before, creating illustrations which capture the charm of stories passed on by word of mouth. Some things that inspire her work are geoglyphs and their mysterious origins, looking up in a church and seeing a carved green man staring back at her. Even broken pottery pieces and coins she finds on the streams and shores of Edinburgh, kept muddy in overflowing pockets. She aims to encourage people to engage in folklore and to cherish it, so that it can be enjoyed by those who come after us.

Folkin' Around

‘Folkin’ Around’ is an entirely lino-cut, illustrated guide to history, nature and folklore in Edinburgh. Through ramblings and wanderings you are guided in uncovering a whole city full of secrets through every season, encouraged to get messy and be hands on with history. It explores the playful way we can re-connect with nature and history through visiting monuments, churches, local pubs as well as celebrating festivals which allow folk culture to thrive. It includes interviews with a folk artist who is known for his Friday Walks as well as a local mudlarker who reveals secrets on the best places to find treasures in Edinburgh.
