Bio

Lucy is a musical theatre singer and composer, originally from Gloucester. In her final year as part of the Reid School of Music, Lucy has split her study across three core projects - recital, dissertation and writing a new family friendly musical for her creative music practice project.

Lucy's recital comprised 10 musical theatre pieces surrounding the theme of musical theatre's links with other media forms. Featuring songs from shows such as Sweeney Todd, Matilda and The Last 5 Years, Lucy's programme demonstrated the diversity in musical theatre music as well as the different character types that can be represented in this format. For videos from this recital, check out Lucy's instagram which is linked above.

Lucy's dissertation is entitled “It’s Like the Way it was Supposed to be Listened to”: The Vinyl Revival Against a Digital Backdrop. Utilising interviews with vinyl consumers, industry professionals and Edinburgh-based record sellers, this paper investigates the growing resurgence of vinyl records during a time where digital music platforms (particularly streaming) are prominent throughout society. This dissertation is linked above for you to read, and Lucy welcomes any questions or feedback on this research through her email address or website, both linked above.

For her creative music practice project, Lucy created a new family friendly musical entitled Happily Ever After...ish. This show will premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2027, and more information about this project can be found below.

Outside of University, Lucy works at Edinburgh music schools St Mary's Music School and Bright Path Piano, alongside reviewing shows for her website and blog (linked above). She also teaches musical theatre singing and music theory to the next generation of performers and has space for more students, either in-person or virtually. More information about this and ways to contact Lucy can be found on her website above.

Happily Ever After...ish

Lucy has been passionate about musical theatre since a young age, through both performing and composing for the medium. Recently, she noticed a gap in the market for a new theatre show written primarily for a family friendly audience - too many young people can be found performing songs from shows with explicit content and language, regardless of whether these songs are suitable for their undeveloped voices. While productions featuring mature content certainly have their place within the genre, to truly open the sphere up to all audiences and promote its power to impact young people, there needs to be more age-appropriate shows to introduce them to the art form in a safe manner. And so Happily Ever After...ish was born! The show is based in both the real world and the land of fairytale - it follows the story of Charlotte, a mother stuck in a loveless marriage who creates a bedtime story for her children, putting the younger version of herself (Charlie) at the centre of the tale. Charlie meets the Pied Piper, Rapunzel and the Ugly Duckling, and teaches the town that they are strong and can do anything they set their minds to. In the second act, fairytale authors Robert Browning, Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm arrive and attempt to banish Charlie and make the town hell, but the townspeople band together to protect their saviour and rid the authors from their home. The show ends with Charlotte realising that the story has helped her as well as her children, and she now feels strong enough to stand up for herself.

For this project, Lucy created the original story, 14 orchestrated and original songs and the full libretto. She worked with a set designer to create concept images and workshopped 8 of the songs to produce initial recordings. The show has been introduced to local children and parents, and has been met with overwhelming positivity. Lucy plans for the show to premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2027, and recordings of 3 songs from the show can be found below. Rolling Along

This is the opening song from Happily Ever After...ish. Here we are introduced to mother Charlotte and father Freddy as they go about their daily lives - picking up children James and Sophie from school, going to work and having dinner, where it slowly becomes apparent that things between the parents aren't as good as they seem, and they are simply putting on a brave face for their children.

This song was recorded by performers from both The University of Edinburgh and members of the wider music community, with vocals from Hamish Bridges, Sarah Haddath, Wesley Hua and Eva Smeddle.

Seams

This is the second song from Happily Ever After...ish. This song is performed by the protagonist Charlotte, a mother who would do anything for her children despite finding herself in a loveless marriage, far from the life she imagined as a child. Here she is seen at the dinner table surrounded by her family who enjoy a normal dinner, while Charlotte fades into the background unnoticed and considers her position within the family.

This song is sung by Lucy herself, with piano accompaniment from Monty Milner.

Waves of Change

The final song from Happily Ever After...ish. In this epilogue protagonist Charlotte realises that she has changed during the show and is ready to fight for what she wants.

This song is sung by Lucy herself, with piano accompaniment from Chris Baxter.
