Workshop Leading

During my degree, I have completed two community music placements. My first placement was with children with special educational needs, and the second was with a P3 class in a state primary school, for which I was project lead. This year, I also completed the NYOS Music Leaders programme, through which I had the chance to lead a workshop with the NYOS Development Orchestra. My experience in community music has completely transformed my musical perspective, shifting the focus from what an individual can ‘do’ for music (technical skill) to what music can do for an individual (enjoyment, personal growth, social connection). I hope to continue working within community music settings, and I am also inspired to implement community music values within educational contexts.

Related student work

Through my degree, I have covered a wide range of the classical clarinet canon, including Weber's Grand Duo Concertant and Première Rhapsodie by Debussy. I explored my interest in jazz through my third year programme of Gershwin's Three Preludes, Paragon by Theresa Martin and Horowitz's Sonatina. For my end-of-degree recital, I chose to present a contrasting programme of Techno Parade by Connesson for clarinet, flute and piano, Adagio from Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, and ended with Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Guastavino. I have formed multiple chamber ensembles, playing repertoire such as Arnold's Divertimento for Oboe, Flute and Clarinet for the Edinburgh Society of Musicians. Recently, I performed alongside the duo Sequoia during the Week of Sound, performing a programme including Attica by Frederic Rzewski, and premiering the unaccompanied clarinet piece Gyre by Jo Nicholson. I'm also in a bossa nova trio!

As a workshop leader, my focus is on accessibility, inclusion and decolonisation within classical music and music education. When writing the project report for my primary school community music placement, I chose to focus on the possibility of a symbiotic relationship between community music and music education - how community music initiatives within schools could help to achieve the goals of the Curriculum for Excellence, and how notions of music education can be implemented in a community music setting to achieve the goals of the project.
