My Portfolio explores different ideas of musical ‘Order’ and ‘Chaos’. It is comprised of three pieces all linked by ideas of ‘otherness';  The Odd Man Out, The Great Depression and The veil is thin and unwinding.

The Odd Man Out explores ‘order’ and ‘chaos’ as ideas of ‘harmony’ and ‘conflict and disruption’. This chaos is reflected in the performative gestures, and musically order is when everyone is ‘blending’ perfectly, and ‘chaos’ is when the Violin 1 stands out.

The Great Depression examines order as ideas of ‘stability’ and ‘progression’ and chaos as the idea of ‘instability’ and ‘regression’ or ‘stagnation’. The Great Depression uses two loopers to create the effect of being ‘dragged’ into repeating patterns and cycles.

The veil is thin and unwinding explores ‘chaos’ as the idea of two worlds internally intertwining, and ‘order’ as their separation. Musically, this is reflected in the intertwining of the violin and the looper pedal, with small passages of order when they are separated. Metaphorically, this piece reflects the intertwining of the veil between life and death, and the internal chaos of grief, and grieving who someone once was.
