Project description

Market Hub: A versatile community space where agricultural and culinary education converge with creativity, fostering connections through food and sustainable practices.

Located within the historic Edinburgh Fruitmarket at 45 Market Street, this design re imagines the site as a community-centred space that addresses pressing issues of food waste and food insecurity. The Market Hub philosophy is driven by the belief that food has the power to connect us back to one another, to ourselves, and to our earth.

Scotland is one of the most agriculturally blessed countries in the world, growing an abundance of quality produce all year round that deserves to be celebrated! This space provides a unique opportunity for members of the community and professionals of the agriculture and culinary industries to come come together to do so by sharing skills and creating. The goal is for users of the space is understand how sustainable food practices can be accessible, practical, and enjoyable.

The design draws inspiration from the Mid Century era, a period that marks the initial decline of the global produce trade and the closure of the original Edinburgh fruitmarket. In light of this connection, the design seeks to restore and reinvigorate our relationship with fresh food by exploring and celebrating its full potential.
