Director's statement:
In my work, I hope to exploit the fixed nature of identity, pushing, expanding, and obscuring until it becomes ridiculous, camp, and bizarre. My background in theatre has encouraged me to consider our identity as a costume we wear, and therefore something we can take off. This film considers masculinity as an unreachable, fantastical ideal that men aspire to through rituals and behaviours. It considers how the effort to define masculinity and the gender binary has fortified these fascinations and encouraged men into solitary, dangerous spaces online. I’ve learnt how the pressures to be masculine pervade the daily lives of young men today, and that you can learn most about people, not when you ask them who they are, but when you ask them who they’d like to be.
