Project description

The Linen Map of Belonging explores the revival of flax farming in Europe, focusing on Northern Ireland, where linen once formed the heart of local identity and industry. Through the slow, artisanal processes of growing, processing, spinning, and weaving flax into linen, this project aims to counter the culture of fast fashion and synthetic materials. It is grounded in values of heritage, nature, mapping, home, regeneration, and storytelling through material.

There are three resulting collections. The first is a handwoven, naturally dyed linen textile series, named Seed to Cloth, inspired by the Scottish Highlands, emphasizing texture, heritage, and zero- waste processes. The second is a curtain collection combining digitally printed imagery with needle-felted linen, merging traditional and contemporary techniques, entitled Linen Landscapes. The third is a toile wallpaper and wallcovering collection featuring drawings that document each stage of flax production, screen-printed onto recycled paper and organic linen.
