Mitsuki Nakatani

Artist Statement

As a London-born-Japanese artist at the intersections of queerness and neurodivergence, Mitsuki Nakatani wanders along the hyphen, finding refuge in liminality. Materiality and embodied process are anchor points of Mitsuki’s interdisciplinary practice. Navigating the ambivalence surrounding notions of home, belonging, and otherness, the physicality of working with mixed media translates intangible lived experiences into a tactile language. In recent works, she reconnects with her Japanese heritage through intuitive handcrafting. Using fabrics collected and boro-mended by her unknown ancestors, she works in collaboration with them. Contemplating fragmented memories, sentimentality, and superstitions rooted in Buddhist and Shinto rituals, while in parallel to the performance of cultural appreciation.

Formally trained in Fine Art Painting (Insight School of Art) and BA Textile Design (Falmouth University), she is now completing her MA in Contemporary Art Practice (ECA), with plans to continue cultural heritage research in Florence, Italy through the RSA John Kinross Scholarship.
