Project description

Drawing inspiration from Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, this collection channels the allure and complexity of elite students entangled in beauty, intellect, and tragedy. Set against a prestigious Vermont college, it evokes a timeless, mysterious atmosphere where fashion becomes storytelling, and each garment echoes a reference from Tartt’s world.

At its heart, the collection explores the theme of a duality between innocence and corruption, as well as layered identities that are central literary motifs translated visually and texturally into the clothing. The muted palette of black and beige, offset with rich burgundies and stark whites, mirrors the intellectual rigour and solemnity of the characters’ academic lives, while the intricate textures of lace and felted crochet allude to the novel’s hidden tensions and moral ambiguity. Each piece is crafted with the same care and depth found in Tartt’s prose, aiming to embody the psychological complexity and slow unravelling that defines her narrative style.

Silhouettes nod to 1980s prep with a Gothic twist, mirroring the characters’ polished exteriors and internal decay. Crisp white shirts with pleated collars and romantic sleeves are paired with sharp tailoring, while lace adornments give an added richness. Felted crochet becomes a metaphor for “fatal flaws”, appearing as important embroidered quotes in look one, and evolving into brocade-like doilies and pinstripes in looks two and three. In looks four and five, a further crochet fur technique evokes the group’s descent into violence, as if they wear the symbolic pelts of their victims.

Ultimately, The Secret History collection is a tribute to the powerful relationship between literature and fashion. It speaks to those who find beauty in subtext, who understand clothing not only as adornment but as dialogue. This is a wardrobe that is both a statement and a story, inviting its wearers to become characters themselves and to weave their own narratives into the fabric of life.
