Rapunzel Retold

My first graduate project reimagines the well-known fairy-tale of ‘Rapunzel’ into a promenade production to be performed across various National Trust sights. In my adaptation, Rapunzel grows up in a medieval nunnery and becomes a herbal healer determined to defy patriarchal society. Characters are inspired by influential medieval women and the costumes take inspiration from fashion of the 13th and 14th centuries with rich textiles and a floral motif running throughout.

My final costume for Rapunzel includes leatherwork, screen printing, and a plaited length of hair which she has cut off to use as a rope to leave her tower.

Jamaica Inn

For my second graduate project, I adapted the novel ‘Jamaica Inn’ by Daphne Du Maurier into a dance performance. My designs are drawn from early 19th century fashion and take inspiration from my own photography of Bodmin Moor and the Cornish coast, translating these into textiles through digital printing, breakdown and mending techniques.

My final costume is for Mary Yellen, a headstrong character who goes to live with her aunt and uncle at Jamaica Inn. She soon gets caught up in the secret ongoings of smuggling and ship wrecking.
