BIO

Hello, I'm Yaxuan Wang. You can also call me by vlonica.

I am an illustrator as well as a picture book author. I have a strong passion for folklore and weird urban legends, and this year I've been exploring Japanese kaidan in the form of black and white line drawings, which I've used to create the Teru teru bōzu picture book and a series of posters related to the kwaidan(1964) film. I have also experimented with brightly coloured children's drawings, such as a collaborative project with children in scotland, a zine about diabetes, and a children's picture book called "where is my magic shoe".

In the future I hope to create more picture books and illustrations, and if I have the chance I would like to participate in the production of horror visual novel games.

teru teru bōzu(cover)

This is a story about Teru teru bōzu (sunny doll) in Japan.

Once upon a time, there was a monk who recited sutras so that rainy days would turn into sunny days, so people called him the Sunny Day Monk. One year, when the whole country was raining heavily, the emperor asked him to solve the problem, but the weather didn't clear up after he chanted for many days. The emperor thought he was a liar and executed him, but the weather cleared up the next day after the monk's head was hung under a roof.

Where is my magic shoe

This picture book is aimed at children aged 10-15.

this story wants to tell children that a person's life can be bound by habits, favourite people and objects, and the fear of an unknown future, and that these feelings together form a comfortable zone. Staying in the comfort zone may not be a bad thing, but one day when prompted by external forces to go out of the familiar can find more different fun, and the direction of development. You can still go back to the old comfortable zone, your efforts are just expanding it, so don't be afraid of that.

Referencing the narrative of ‘Alice in Wonderland’, the narrative interweaves reality and fantasy scenes to show the secondary damage of cyber violence on victims of sexual assault.
