In Tangier, stories and reality intertwine to infuse a poetic atmosphere into the city's reinvention. From the perspective of Choukri, the protagonist of Mohammed Choukri's For the sake of bread, it was discovered that in a city rich in culture, there is a crisis in the level of education of ordinary people. Through traditional storytelling and modern media playback, the design aims to provide opportunities for local civilians to learn and become more culturally aware.
The Storytelling Centre repurposes the deserted Gran Teatro Cervantes, formerly the city's hub of cultural activities, into a cultural communication centre catering specifically to the needs of the local population and the foreign community. The design offers a versatile area for cultural activities, encompassing a range of performances, exhibitions, and community gatherings. Community engagement and interaction are crucial in the design process, including open-plan recreational areas, workshops, and exhibition spaces to promote collaboration among inhabitants. Simultaneously, the Gran Teatro Cervantes pays tribute to its historical and cultural legacy by preserving its architectural elements and organising exhibitions that effectively communicate its historical importance to the public. The design also considers the significance of sustainable development and the transformative potential of repairing historic buildings and reimagining urban planning in Tangier.
