Project Description

The Chinese Culture centre, developed through an urge to present a more contemporary image of China. Research revealed that the perception of China among local Edinburgh residents did not align with the nation's current identity, which is largely shaped by its pioneering high-tech industries.

Due to its proximity to bustling Princess Street, 33 George Street was selected as the optimal location. The expansive glass facade serves as an inviting entrance, drawing in tourists, local office workers, and passersby alike.

To authentically depict modern China, the cultural center seamlessly blends elements of exhibition, restaurant and tearoom (dedicated to the traditional tea ceremony). This contemporary character is accentuated by a minimalist design aesthetic and a refined selection of materials to distinguish each essential area of the experience.

About the Site

Virgin Money is a bank located at 83 George Street, EH2 3ES; I chose it because of its location and structure.

Location: George Street is one of the main streets in Edinburgh's new town, beside Princes Street, known for its multicultural fusion of food and lodging experiences; there are many hotels and restaurants from different countries on both sides, providing the customer with a novelty experience. Ideally, I place my Chinese Cultural Centre on George Street because more customers just walking by could be attracted to the shop by putting it there. Because it is located on a street famous for its multicultural atmosphere, it will only stand out with its characteristics.

Structure: When I reach the site, its giant shopfront attracts me, and the glass facade gives customers a sense of transparency. The ground floor of the building is an opened space, which is very in line with my theme and is also an excellent carrier of both the exhibit and dining area; when it comes to the back of the ground floor, a mezzanine was set up, creating a private areas. The first floor is a broader space that gives the site a unique sense of opening and welcoming.
