Tracing the Life Cycle of Custom House

Inspired by Stewart Brand's architectural shear layer diagram, I created a shear layer of the Customs House, revealing the time traces of the building at different levels during the renewal process.

Custom House's Layer diagram expand

The Custom House, as a historic building, has remained unchanged in its location and structure during the renovation process. The layers from the building's surface to the inside are iterated layer by layer, gradually forming a rich time layer. I tried to fi nd the changes in different time layers in the constantly changing and iterative building materials, and analyze whether these changes can refl ect the historical changes and usage traces of Custom House.

As users of buildings, people are an indispensable part of the architectural hierarchy. In further research, I hope to explore the role of people in architecture, especially in the Custom House. Through this project, I aim to explore every level of the building, which not only affects the physical form of the space, but also deeply affects people's experience and emotional resonance.

Material Extraction

I collected and extracted the existing materials of Custom House, explore the combination of new and old materials, and increase the vitality of the building.

Through the sketch model experiment of different material combinations, I processed and reorganized old and new materials to explore new combinations and forms. I used photos to record the entire processing process, paying attention to the changes and performance of materials during processing. And presented the process of time erosion through modern display methods.

Project Background

Leith Custom House is committed to developing into a cultural, artistic and creative center. As a historical building that witnesses the development and changes of Leith Port, it now serves the community, including independent artists and Leith Art School. The building provides exhibition space for modern creative works, aiming to create a space that blends history and modernity, inspires creative inspiration and enhances the user's spatial experience.

Continuation of the Leith Art Hub of the connecting interior(sem2) project, based on the functional zoning of the plane:
1.Response to the skin layer.
Remove some of the facade materials and structures of Custom House Gallery.
2.Response to the core, the soul layer.
Use some of the materials removed from the building to recycle and design the display rack.
