Bio

Brutalism, in various forms of architecture, film and literature has inspired Sophia Siersted's artistic practice profoundly. Her first introduction to this mid-20th-century architectural style occurred in Edinburgh, a city dotted inconspicuously with brutalist buildings. Her interests led her to explore the global resurgence of brutalism in contemporary society. From the concrete urbanism of German club culture to the world-building of famous film directors, she has sourced inspiration for the paintings she creates.

Her artworks aim to capture the boldness and grandeur of such buildings through an abstract format. Not only is she interested in the magnitude of such buildings, but also the material elements they hold. She creates textured, sculptural-like artworks inspired by brutalism using diverse materials like paint, cement, and flour. Her artworks are about the capacity for grandeur and act as a testament to the immense emotional resonance that buildings evoke for her. When she finds inspiration, it is about creating the perfect alchemy of materials blending oils, acrylics, pastels, and all sorts of thickening pastes to give form to her artwork.
