In my work, I delve into the synergy between self-exploration and the creative process, weaving together my Eastern roots, Sufi psychology and experience as a yoga teacher. Central to my practice is achieving a 'flow state' through intuitive movement, breathwork, and repetition. I aim to create spaces that offer a unique lens to reimagine the relationship with the self.
In today's fast-paced society, efficiency often takes precedence over depth and reflection. My work, however, pivots towards an in-depth analysis of the art-making processes, underscoring the essential role of slowness, introspection, movement and somatic awareness. This vision is embodied through meditative installations, performances and embroidered fabrics. Using miniature drawings as a gateway to meditation, I create pieces by repeating specific words in my mother tongue, Urdu. Importantly, each word serves as a narrative of my ongoing journey of healing and reconnecting with my body.
My approach, rooted in these artistic methods, unfolds within harmonious spaces. Here, I aim to orchestrate a symphony of interactions—between the creative process, the art itself, and the space it inhabits—thereby engaging the audience in a meaningful, reflective dialogue with both the art and their inner being.
In Sufi psychology, ‘Nafs’ translates to ‘the life force’ or ‘the self’. It is a concept that encompasses the individual's inner self, including desires, emotions, and intellect. In the absence of guidance from 'Qalb'—the heart space—the self is steered by the ego, leading to misalignment with one's true essence.
‘Ruh’ symbolises the subtle body. It is seen as the eternal, unchangeable aspect of a person, untouched by worldly desires or sufferings. As the purest part of human existence, it acts as a compass aiming towards moral and spiritual integrity.
The material choice for this piece was crucial, and I found that the translucent fabric resonated perfectly with the concept. The word floats delicately, evoking the intangible essence of the soul. As light passes through the fabric, it illuminates the embroidered word, mirroring the ethereal nature of the soul.
Together, 'Qalb', 'Nafs', and 'Ruh' form a unified series. This triad has guided both, my artistic and personal journey towards re-connecting with
my body
my breath
my intuition
my roots
my silence
and most importantly,
my essence.
