​Shiyan Huang is a freelance illustrator and graphic novelist who enjoys creating a dreamlike yet familiar space, using vibrant colours and narrative forms in comics to convey emotional themes. Her work often explores emotional connections and self-awareness. ​​

Her recent works explore the often-distorted emotional connections in East Asian families. In her graphic novel "Urban Captivity," she depicts the story of an East Asian mother and daughter living together in Edinburgh, inspired by her relationship with her mother and observations of mother-daughter dynamics in East Asian families. This book seeks to delve into the nuanced contemplation of love within East Asian families and how we can possess both the ability to love and a sense of individuality.
