Qianwei(Bri) Bi is a contemporary artist based in Shanghai and Edinburgh. She earned a Honor Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Cognitive Science from the University of Toronto.
Her works span multiple media, including ceramic-based sculpture, installation art, and performance art, all centered on the contemplation of identity, time, and existence. By integrating Eastern Asian metaphysics with Western minimalist abstraction, Bi aims to evoke a profound sense of self-awareness through the presentation of austerity and simplicity. The collection of miniature bowls with round bottoms of varying sizes serves as the iconic element in her work, which symbolizes both the fundamental ritualistic aspects of daily life and the rediscovery of her own cultural identity.
Bi emphasizes bodily involvement through repetitive manual actions and tactile experiences; thus, the production process is central to his practice, serving as both a ritual of self-memory and a means of objectifying time. Her works transcend static visual objects, aiming to provide the audience with a holistic state of perception that blends immediate sensory experiences with mental awareness through their nature and production process.
