Project Description

This project is centred around an out of use fly tower in Dundee. My proposal renovates this ‘container’ of four weathered masonry walls into a place centred around both formal and informal dance, and a celebration of music.

Alongside formal and informal dance I investigated contrast in other ways:

Conceal | Reveal

Night | Day

Dark | Light

Opaque | Translucent

Rough | Clean

Industrial | Human

Existing | New

Solid | Void

Disconnect | Connect

These themes become present in my project through material, use, and planning - concealing and revealing spaces through architecture and the opacity of materials, designing a building that is used during the day and at night, and connecting people to dance and those around them by disconnecting them from the outside world.

Other themes that are present in my project include respecting the building’s history, both as a place built for entertainment and as an object in the natural world, inclusive and accessible dance, and creating spaces that benefit the people of Dundee.

First Position

I began this project by studying ‘Abstract Painting (726)’, by Gerhard Richter, which was created by painting four vertical coloured bands, and after this had dried applying thick grey paint and scraping this across to make the painting seem duller. I thought that this gives the painting a sense of depth, which I wanted to explore. In doing this, I created a block made of layers of wax and bands of coloured paint, and painted the top layer grey before carving into it, revealing the colours underneath.

This began my explorations in contrast, and how it ties in with layering, erosion and edges. Each layer of wax or paint contrasts the others, and all the eroded layers underneath contrast the grey surface. Where the edges of layers meet shows a contrast between them.

photograph of block of wax and paint that has been carved into. it is grey on the non-carved places, but the carved places show different paint colours, frayed fabric, and layers of wax.

Half the image is a photo of layers through the wax block close up, and the other half of the image is a photo of the stairway model looking directly down.

Technical Details: Music Production Studio

1: CORRIDOR

12.5mm plasterboard ; 10mm void ; 270mm sheep’s wool insulation with 280 x 100mm Timber joists @500mm centres (environmentally friendly, and breathable to allow moisture from people dancing to leave the structure); 12.5mm plasterboard; 150mm void (helps to acoustically isolate the space, minimise resonance, and enhance bass response, which is important in electronic music production); 12.5mm plasterboard; 175mm timber frame; 21mm plywood (its thickness and density helps with soundproofing)

2: FLOOR

20mm solid wood flooring; 17mm underfloor heating pipe @200mm centres; 2mm aluminium diffuser plate; 27mm chipboard; 50mmx100mm timber battons @ 500mm centres to create floating floor (isolates the room from structure-borne noise, which helps to create better acoustics); 5mm hush barrier mat (acoustic mat to minimise sound heard outside from the nightclub); 10mm hush felt resilient layer; 22mm high density cement particle chipboard; 270mm sheep’s wool insulation with 270 x 100mm Timber joists @500mm centres; plywood 21mm; 420mm glulam beam
