Context

Globally, there are more than 89.000 femicides a year, 55% of which are perpetrated by the victim's partner or ex-partner. Although every person could face domestic abuse, some are at higher risk and encounter additional challenges as a result of unique combinations of systemic oppression based on sexism, racism, classism, ableism and others.

Research

In collaboration with researchers and third-sector organisations, I found that intersectionality is one of the persistent gaps in this context because it's still not well understood or taken into account by most policy-makers and service providers, even in Scotland, which is considered a benchmark in its approach to preventing and eradicating Violence Against Women and Girls.

Design development

By applying storytelling methods and interactive tools, the design proposals intend to make visible the diverse experiences of domestic abuse that women face and, at the same time, highlight the barriers in the current system, which keeps failing certain groups of women more than others, so that people can apply an intersectional approach to services and legislation.
