May Cockcroft (b. 2002 in Cornwall, England; based in Edinburgh, UK) interrogates the non-linear nature of her painting process by combining an intuitive, abstract painterly style with geometric forms. Inspired by graffiti buffing and consequential marks of the studio walls, Cockcroft’s paintings possess contemplative elements of the concealed and revealed, the preserved and destroyed. Hand writing prompts, thoughts, and next steps onto her paintings, I.e. ‘block this out with ochre’, the text that remains visible invites the viewer into the no-nonsense self-reflection that is critical to her methodology.
