In my work, I explore different subcultures and communities through my use of collaged photography, historical archived images and illustrations. For my main project this year I explored the history of the music genre shoegaze, looking at its origins in the early 90s/late 80s to the new wave of artists spearheading the genre's recent resurgence. Nu_Noise_02 is inspired by the DIY aspect of 70s punk zines as well as the guitar and visual distortion that go hand in hand with the genre's aesthetics. With added promotional video, posters, fabric patches and a CD mixtape. Experimenting with the different texture possibilities through risograph printing my digital drawings has allowed me to push the quality of my work to higher levels and has been a practice I have fallen in love with.
It was important to me to advertise the magazine in a way that would be familiar with fans of shoegaze music. I took inspiration from the style of the genre's music videos and incorporated my own work's collage style blending elements of both new and old style visuals. This keeps in theme with the magazine's contents discussing both old and new music.
After going for multiple walks down Union Canal in Broxburn and hearing about its history from my partner I decided to do my own research. This zine depicts two bunnies who may resemble my partner and I on a walk and discussing how the area surrounding the canal has changed since the closure of the Broxburn Oil works. I collaged archival imagery from The Scottish Shale Archives and the West Lothian Council as well as my own photography to really make this zine come to life.
