This project locates in Shenzhen, a really new city fast developed itself in the past 4 decades as the development of the Chinese contemporary economy. My site, Shekou, a harbour where used to happen frequent fishing activities, has now been filled with lots of abandoned old ships by the coastline. The fishing culture has been gradually demolishing as the local industry and economy develops. When Shenzhen was designated as a special economic zone, Shekou had been chosen as the first industrial zone in Shenzhen to develop its economy and then led the whole of Shenzhen to improve. Hence, the development of Shekou could briefly represent the development of Shenzhen.
Reclamation with blasting mountains in Shekou was continued in 30 years after 1978 to build the industrial zone. The rapid development of the economy in Shenzhen was built on the huge sacrifice of the natural environment and cultural heritage. During the past 30 years, the slogans ‘Time is money, efficiency is life’ did accelerate the development of society and the rhythm of people's lives in Shenzhen.
History and culture are closely linked together. When the modern history of a region was erased, the regional culture can only continue to be created depending on people’s memory about the past. Nevertheless, individual memory strongly depends on collective memory. A specific place can evoke the collective memory of people presenting themselves there.
